How it works

Lost things and found things go on the same map, where location and a few honest details can do the matching.

Put it where it happened

Drop a map pin or choose a Berkeley landmark. Cards and IDs use an approximate public pin.

Say what it is

A specific item name may be enough. Add a description or photo when it helps, but keep one identifying detail private.

Meet safely

Ask for the private detail before handing anything over, then meet somewhere staffed, public, or well lit.

Reasonable questions

Is this run by the university?

No. Dropped is a community project with no university affiliation or endorsement.

Who can use it?

For the MVP, viewing and posting require a code sent to an @berkeley.edu address. This keeps the board within the campus community while we build stronger abuse controls.

How long do pins stay up?

Open pins retire after ninety days. Mark yours reunited when it works out.

Should I post a reward?

It is optional. Keep it small, clear, and honest.

What about bikes?

Pin it, but file a police report too. Dropped is not an emergency or recovery service.

Safety

A listing should help the right person recognize an item without handing everyone the proof of ownership.

Before posting

Keep one detail private

Do not show full ID numbers, readable addresses, access-card codes, or keys beside a recognizable address.

Before handoff

Verify the claimant

Ask for a detail that is not public: a lock-screen image, bag contents, engraving, or exact wear mark.

When meeting

Stay in public

Prefer staffed desks and busy daylight locations. Never enter a stranger’s home or vehicle to recover an item.

For emergencies, theft in progress, or immediate danger, contact the appropriate emergency service. Dropped does not monitor reports in real time.
